A Day in the (Financial) Life of the California Democratic Party

Govern For California tracks political contributions related to California state politics. Contributions to the California Democratic Party (of which I am a member) are particularly important because Democrats control the state legislature that controls state spending and legislation.

Set out below is a list of contributions to the CDP on a single day, April 19, 2016. As you can see, dominating the list are unions of government employees and healthcare workers. Together those special interests extract more than $100 billion a year from state-sponsored spending. Most of the rest are corporations, associations and other special interests seeking money or favorable regulatory treatment.

When legislators bow to special interests, they crowd out public services and raise costs for students, citizens and taxpayers. The antidote is informed political giving by political philanthropists to candidates who support the general interest.
